[Case Study] How BMMT offered Sonia and her family hope and relief

BMMT helps people every day. We especially love that it can offer hope to those who may feel they aren’t progressing as they’d like via a standard medical stream and are seeking something to complement their current treatment. At 45 years old Sonia was diagnosed with motor neuron disease. After treatment with BMMT Sonia made some incredible progressions. Her mother decided to learn the therapy so she could treat her daughter daily at home. We are lucky to have Sonia and her mum allow us to share their incredible results so far.
What is Motor Neuron Disease
Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which nerve cells (neurons) fail to work normally, causing rapidly progressive muscle weakness. Subtypes of MND include:
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA)
- Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP)
- Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS)
The disease specifically affects the upper motor neurons in the brain that control the muscles that enable people to walk, speak, breathe and swallow. The job of these neurons is to descend from the brain to the spinal cord, activating the lower motor neurons. These lower motor neurons exit the spinal cord and activate muscles. With no nerves to activate them the muscles weaken and waste, progressively affecting a person’s ability to move their limbs, speak, swallow and breathe. A person’s mind and senses usually remain intact whilst this is occurring. According to Australian statistics the average life expectancy for people with MND is 2.5 years and each day in Australia two people are diagnosed with MND. Currently there is no known cure and no recorded effective treatment.
Sonia’s Story
Motor Neuron Disease Diagnosis
In 2013 at the age of 45 Sonia was diagnosed with bulbar palsy a subtype of motor neuron disease. The initial symptoms were slurring of speech with eventual loss of speech, palsied tongue and weakened neck muscles. With time her breathing muscles became weakened and she required a bypap machine to help her breathe. The progression of the disease was dramatic and eventually all of the muscles in Sonia’s body became weakened or wasted until she was unable to move. Sonia became bedfast and when she eventually left hospital she was very frail, weighing less then 30kgs, rolled up in the foetal position and unable to communicate or wanting to.
Regeneration
Upon leaving hospital Sonia pulled herself into life with the assistance of her family. She gained weight and her body developed a layer of fat/collagen under the skin. Her skin, which once hung off her bones in dry paper rolls, began to appear healthy again. She started engaging in life and communicating through her computer. The progression of the disease stopped but it had left its trail of destruction on her body.
Introducing BMMT
In February 2019 Sonia was introduced to BMMT by Chiropractor and ABMMA graduate Neil Skilbeck. At this time her most distressing symptom was her sleep patterns. She was only able to get about two hours of very restless sleep each night. Sonia’s need to wear a breathing mask resulted in thick saliva catching in her throat, making it impossible to have continual periods of sleep. A cycle of discomfort and pain from lack of movement followed by repositioning to alleviate the pain and discomfort would ensue.
Neil worked with Sonia in a series of ten BMMT treatments over two months with a focus on stimulating her cranial nerves. “The most noticeable symptomatic changes occurred almost immediately” Sonia’s mum said, “Sonia now sleeps 4 to 5 hours straight with restful sleep.” After seeing these improvements Sonia’s mum purchased her own Bioelectric Machine so she could perform self treatment with the aim of eventually gaining the confidence to treat her daughter at home in between sessions.
In May 2019 Sonia’s mum contacted Tracy Taulier at ABMMA to discuss learning BMMT principals and continuing her daughter’s treatment whilst Neil way away.
BMMT Results
To date Tracy has visited Sonia in her home for four BMMT treatments and the improvements have continued. The thick saliva problem that was occurring with the night mask now hardly ever causes a problem and Sonia continues to experience positive sleeping patterns.
At Sonia’s fourth treatment she presented with a jaw spasm that often turned in to jaw lock. Sonia was finding this increasingly debilitating and painful as it restricted any movement that may upset her jaw. After this treatment Sonia’s jaw spasms stopped and she has not had another lock jaw or teeth grinding situation to date. Her mum said, “her facial muscles are relaxed, her face has not got the stressed look it had before.”
Sonia is also now able to sleep in a better position with her neck muscles. This takes the strain off the muscles around the jaw and gives her teeth more space to react with a situation like jaw spasm. The new position also helps with saliva flow.
Going forward
Sonia’s mum has been using BMMT techniques for her own self treatment as she gains the confidence to work on her daughter. With assistance from ABMMA she is now learning specific BMMT techniques so she can work on Sonia’s jaw and temporal daily. Complementing therapist administered BMMT therapy with self-treatment is the fastest way to activate the body’s natural regenerative mechanisms. We are excited to walk alongside Sonia and her mum and witness the incredible changes they are both making. Sonia will continue treatments with Tracy on a monthly basis and also receive treatment form her mum at home daily.
Sonia’s story is incredibly inspiring and we hope that sharing it offers readers hope. We are passionate about offering practical teaching so that the therapy can be safely administered by anyone, allowing people to take hold of their own wellness, helping themselves and those around them. We are incredibly grateful that Sonia and her family have allowed us to share their BMMT story so far and look forward to sharing more of their progress with you as we follow their journey.
