In this article, we explore Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), how it is linked to Bioelectric Meridian Therapy and take a look into Tianjun Liu’s research paper ‘The scientific hypothesis of an “energy system in the human body’ from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, published in Science Direct.
Traditional Chinese Medicine and the energy system
Traditional Chinese Medicine is more than just medicine. It’s a way of thinking about the body and our health. Ancient TCM sees the human body as a tiny little universe, with vital energy flow (Qi) that travels through us and maintains our health.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) formally recognised Traditional Chinese Medicine in its global medical compendium in 2018 and it is estimated to be around 2500 years old.
Tianjun Liu discusses Qigong (meaning a form of movement) and the imbalances of the energy flowing through our body. The paper highlights, “Qigong theory and practice does not refer to the material system of the human body. From the perspective of Qigong, all diseases originate from a misaligned and imbalanced mode of energy operation, but the local or overall energy can be adjusted back to a normal state through unifying the body, mind and breath.
“The ancient TCM term for Qigong was “guidance”, which indicates that Qigong guides the flow of internal qi through an adjustment of the body, mind and breath. There is evidence that Qigong therapy is effective, especially for chronic diseases and miscellaneous diseases that are difficult to treat.”
TCM focuses on imbalances in the body’s energy that can cause illness and disease. These imbalances are generally thought to be caused by a variation in the complementary and opposite forces that create the overall energy flow, otherwise known as yin and yang.
Liu continues to explain that like the material structure or system of the human body, “the energy operation of the human body forms a system because of its mutual communication at different levels.” A key difference between the two systems is that one is tangible and can be observed (the material system), unlike the energy system which is unobservable: “the energy system is a system in which intangible forces interact with each other,” (Liu, 2018).
“An excellent doctor treats disease before it arises but not diagnosed diseases,” (Liu, 2018).
Bioelectric Meridian Therapy as a practical application of TCM
The best way of interacting with the body’s energy is through energy therapy. Tianjun Liu says that “because of the rapid development of modern science and technology, TCM needs to incorporate external observation using modern scientific technology.”
Bioelectric Meridian Therapy (BMT) is based on TCM philosophy and harnesses the body’s natural bioelectricity to supercharge the natural healing process.

Combining TCM beliefs with modern technology, Bioelectric Meridian Therapy offers the best of both worlds. Regarded as revolutionary in its advantages by traditional Chinese therapy masters, Bioelectric Meridian Therapy delivers the effects of massage, acupuncture, cupping and other natural modalities in a single session. BMT blends Traditional Chinese Medicine principles with modern technology, restoring balance and stimulating Qi and blood flow.
Restoring balance to the energy system
“An excellent doctor treats disease before it arises but not diagnosed diseases,” (Liu, 2018). This familiar Chinese expression illustrates the advantages of TCM clinical practice in treating diseases that have not yet affected the material system of the body – through the energy system.
According to the energy system theory, an incipient disease is one that has disturbed the energetic system but has not yet impacted the material system. At this stage, there may be no obvious symptoms, Western science may be unable to identify changes in the body through scientific test results. However, in TCM theory, the local or overall energy flow has deviated from normal.
It’s in this critical stage that “if adjustments are not made to rebalance the energy system, the deviation in the energy flow will gradually become fixed. If this happens, the qi imbalance will manifest as physical symptoms, thus affecting the material system and leading to a “diagnosed disease”, (Liu, 2018).
This is where Bioelectric Meridian Therapy has its advantages. BMT assists in unblocking the body’s main meridian pathways, creating a detoxing effect to help restore balance in Qi flow. Restoring the body back to its natural bioelectric rhythm can help prevent imbalances in the body that can develop into disease and illness.
With a balanced energetic system, the body reduces its acidity and improves its natural immune system supporting general health.
The benefits of a holistic approach to health
The greatest benefit of Bioelectric Meridian Therapy is its holistic approach to promoting health and wellbeing. The technique is used to target the underlying causes and imbalances within the body, instead of merely managing the symptoms presented.
This gentle, non-invasive technique is safe for use on all ages from as young as infants and provides benefits to both the client and therapist.
